In the land of cotton, heat & humidity is not soon forgotten

Monday, September 15.  It was in the lower 90s, light variable winds, relentless sun, again high humidity and no shade.  The 58 miles was really tough.  We traveled along the Atchafalaya River until it joined the Mississippi.  This route is part of the Mississippi River Trail.  We were heartened when, mid-journey we came upon the Old River Control headquarters, where Trent gave us ice, water, and good air (our term for a compressor with enough umph to inflate Diane's 120 psi tires).

About 8.5 miles from Natchez, Diane could take little more. She flagged down a pickup, and Darren and Kelly hoisted our bikes into the bed and delivered us right to our hotel, The Eola Hotel in Natchez, MS, a fine old southern establishment.  Later that night we had a delightful dinner in the hotel--Diane tore into rib-eye steak and Rob wolfed down catfish.

Riding Hwy 15, nary a tree in sight!

Trent of the Corps of Engineers saves the day with air for the tires......
....and ice and a palette of water!

Diane escapes the heat by an abandoned building, making sure to avoid the hornets (only to step on a .... hill of fire ants (ouch).

But the heat won out.  Luckily we were rescued by Darren and Kelly.
Who delivered us to our hotel.
