Houston Revisted

Friday, September 19.  Made it!  But for Diane it was a grueling 71.5 miles.  The heat doesn’t faze Rob, who rides strong and steady throughout the day.
Houston has two motels.  We stayed at one on our 2011 kitty-corner  bike trip across America; we stayed at the other one tonight.  It was our 2011 trip through Houston, when we crossed under The Trace, that led us to learn more about this national treasure.  Before getting to the hotel, however, we got good air at a local tire repair and ramshackle service station.  We also stopped at WalMart and obtained WD-40 to service the bikes (the weird clicking sound in Rob’s bike had returned), but our additional search therein for good comestibles for the following day was to no avail.  No worries, though.  A Sav-a-Lot grocery store across the road from our hotel met our needs.  In addition, the Chinese buffet restaurant attached to the hotel had several gluten-free options, and we stoked our stomachs for the following day.
Since there were no breakfast options for the following morning, we bought eggs and bacon and Diane cooked the bacon that night.  This is why we always aim for hotels that have an in-room fridge and microwave.
The steeds at rest.

In April 2011 a Tornado blasted through a five mile section of the Trace. The damage is still very apparent.
A short stretch of the original Trace shaded by Southern Pines.
